Waymo has unveiled the Waymo World Model

Waymo has unveiled the Waymo World Model, a next-generation simulation platform built on Google DeepMind’s Genie 3. This frontier generative model creates hyper-realistic, interactive 3D driving environments – including rare or extreme scenarios like tornadoes, floods, snow, or unusual obstacles – from simple prompts, producing both camera and lidar data.

Unlike traditional simulators trained only on real road data, the World Model leverages Genie 3’s broad pre-trained world knowledge to simulate long-tail events that autonomous vehicles seldom encounter but must be prepared for. Its controllability lets engineers specify weather, scene layout, and vehicle actions to safely and at scale test and improve Waymo Driver’s performance.

Waymo positions this tool as a cornerstone of its “demonstrably safe AI” strategy, helping expand robotaxi services by training its systems on billions of virtual miles before real-world exposure.
